Landscapes of Transformation (Cemetary)
Arizona State University, Fall 2002
Critic: Thomas Hartman
Program Statement:
The Remembrance Garden is a community-owned facility that provides
a place to observe individual and collective ceremonies marking rites of
passage. The facility is also to be used for recreational purposes. By
calling this place a ‘garden’, I am recognizing it as a symbolic landscape
that reflects upon the relationship between culture and
nature--particularly within the context of birth and death, renewal and
passing.
The garden includes a meeting hall, housing for one caretaker, surface
parking for 100 cars, an outdoor plaza, and accommodations for 2,500
deceased in a combination of burial plots, columbaria, and crypts.
